[Event "LBV chess tournament"] [Site "Leiden"] [Date "2012.08.17"] [Round "2"] [White "l'Ami, Erwin"] [Black "Van Oosterom, Chiel"] [Result "0-1"] [ECO "A80"] [PlyCount "70"] [EventType "swiss"] [EventRounds "6"] [EventCountry "NED"] {When asked to provide a short analysis for the Castrop-Rauxel website, I had to take this game, because winning with black against a GM is quite rare for me.} 1. d4 f5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. Bg5 d5 4. e3 Be6 $5 {A little bit unusual. Here 4.. .e6 is by far the most played move. In those positions the bishop is sometimes not doing that well on c8/b7, disturbing the development of other pieces or leaving a pawn on e6 undefended. I tried to transfer my bishop to f7, but maybe the idea is just too slow.} 5. Bd3 Nbd7 $146 { After 5 moves, the position does not occur anymore in my database...} 6. Qf3 g6 7. Nge2 c6 8. h3 Bg7 9. g4 $5 {A very interesting idea. Actually I played, 7... c6 instead of 7...Bf7 because I thought it was better to prevent to positional plan of g4. So this came really as a surprise.} fxg4 (9... Ne4 { This reply turns out to be quite solid.} 10. Bf4 (10. Bxe4 fxe4 11. Qg3 b5 { Here it is possible for Black to expand a bit.}) (10. gxf5 Nxg5 11. Qg4 Bf7 12. Qxg5 e5 13. Qxd8+ Kxd8 $44) 10... O-O 11. Qg2 Qa5 $132) 10. hxg4 Bxg4 11. Qg3 O-O {Quite dangerous for black} (11... Bxe2 { suggested by my opponent afterwards} 12. Bxe2 (12. Nxe2 Qa5+ 13. c3 O-O-O { this could be a safer place for my king}) 12... Qb6 (12... b5 $5) 13. O-O-O O-O-O) 12. f3 Be6 13. Bh6 (13. Nf4 Bf7 14. Qh3 {Planning Ne6} Qe8 {Black is jus t in time to threaten ...e5 and to be able to transfer a queen to f7 after a possible exchange on e6.}) 13... Rf7 14. Nf4 Nf8 15. O-O-O Qd6 16. Rdg1 Bd7 17. Qh4 {It seems white has more than enough compensation for the pawn. Still it is not easy to suggest a clear breakthrough. I guess white should focus on pushing e4, even if he has to exchange some pieces and will not be able to reach an immediate win} (17. Kb1 Ne8 (17... e5 $4 18. Nxg6 $18) 18. Bxg7 Rxg7 19. e4 $36) 17... Ne8 {This looks horrible, but I had to do something to prevent the upcoming sacrifices on g6 and it seems that black can withstand the attack.} 18. Bxg7 Rxg7 19. Rg5 Qf6 20. Rhg1 Ne6 21. Nxe6 Bxe6 22. f4 Nd6 23. Qh2 Bf5 24. Ne2 Rf8 25. Ng3 Qe6 {It was clear that I had the better position as white does not have enough compensation for the pawn. Still, it will not be easy to convert this advantage. Black will always have to pay attention to his king, with the half-open g- and h-files.} 26. Kd2 $4 { This blunders an exchange, black can trap Rg5 now...} (26. Qe2 Bxd3 27. cxd3 Nf7 28. Rg4 Nh6 29. Rg5 Nf5 $15) 26... Bxd3 27. cxd3 Nf7 28. Re5 (28. Nh5 Nxg5 $19 {a check on f3 follows}) 28... Nxe5 29. dxe5 d4 30. exd4 Rxf4 31. Nh5 { White can win the exchange back, but he loses the pawn endgame} gxh5 32. Rxg7+ Kxg7 33. Qxf4 Qh6 34. Ke3 Qxf4+ 35. Kxf4 Kf7 0-1
